Used car checklist
A used car can be excellent value, but only if the condition, history and running costs make sense. Use this checklist before you fall in love with the colour, trim or monthly payment.
History and paperwork
Check the V5C details, MOT history, service records, mileage pattern and whether the seller can explain gaps. A tidy history does not guarantee a good car, but a messy one is a reason to slow down.
Condition checks
Look at tyres, brakes, lights, warning messages, bodywork gaps, fluid levels, damp carpets and uneven wear. A cold start can reveal issues that disappear once the engine is warm.
Test drive
Test steering, braking, clutch or gearbox feel, acceleration, suspension noise and visibility. Try town roads and faster roads if possible. Do not ignore smells, vibrations or warning lights.
Ownership costs
Before buying, check insurance, tax, fuel or charging cost, tyres, servicing and common repair costs for that model. The cheapest purchase price is not always the cheapest car to own.
